Volume 11 — July 2009

Adoption of XML technologies continues to expand among organizations needing to:

  • Structure large amounts of data
  • Repurpose content for diverse uses
  • Share information—without the need for conversion—between disparate operating systems and applications

As these users know, XML results in an extremely fast and reliable data rendering engine.

EMC offers application developers platforms and tools they need to take advantage of the many benefits of adopting XML across the organization.

In this edition of EMC Documentum Insider, we present recent articles and white papers that educate, illustrate, and illuminate readers interested in evaluating XML for their organizations.

We discuss xDB (an XML database product from EMC), Dynamic Delivery Services (a Java toolkit aimed at developing XML delivery applications on top of xDB), and other resources for document capture, production, and management.

All of these technologies are available as embeddable products for you to incorporate into your applications.

A number of the resources described in this newsletter can be found on the EMC Developer Network and at EMCInside.com.

At these sites, you will find archived copies of this newsletter and other updates, news, and information about EMC embeddable products.

Industry leader shares new XML white paper

Specially written for EMC customers, partners, developers, and prospects, XML expert, Kurt Cagle shares this new white paper, Data in Motion: An XML Technologies Primer - A Detailed Review.

The paper explains constituent parts of the XML ecosystem, how they work together, and what role each plays in developing applications for publishing, business reporting, medical record systems, legal contracts, airline specifications, and a host of other potential applications.

EMC Documentum Dynamic Delivery Services (DDS) is a new application platform for applying key XML standards to large, complex, and specialized data sets, as well as for processing this content for both embedded Java and Rich Internet applications.

Author Kurt Cagle is the managing editor of XMLToday.org, and contributing editor to O'Reilly Media, Jupiter Media's DevX, and ECT's Tech News World.

If you are an application developer, architect, or IT manager then this white paper is required reading for reducing development costs while improving application functionality and performance.

White Paper: Managing the XML Revolution: Organizing and Delivering Content Components for Engaging Applications, Best Practices Planning

To achieve the promise of XML, it is important to blend the power of XML with the capabilities of enterprise content management (ECM).

XML adds structure and intelligence to enterprise content. ECM provides management and governance to XML, and delivers the tools and services for controlling granular content components on a large scale, across multiple enterprise applications.

This white paper lays out the content management challenges facing enterprises today, and how an XML content platform can help meet those challenges. It also describes how an XML content platform—specifically Documentum with the addition of xDB and XML services—can broaden use of your enterprise applications, further unlocking the value of enterprise information.

A Simple DDS Primer

This new article, aimed at developers with a Java background, provides an introduction to Dynamic Delivery Services (DDS) and how they can be used to build an application. DDS is a Java toolkit for developing XML delivery applications on top of xDB, EMC's XML database product.

A Simple DDS Primer is perfect for those who need to gain insight in the DDS application creation process, and a basic understanding of the basic DDS concepts, tools, and functions. Descriptions in the article are high level and offer links to DDS documentation and demo applications, for which source code is available. Concepts discussed in this document are illustrated in the demos.
